A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. Pro 16:9

The Heart of David

Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

God has recorded the intricacies of David’s life for our learning. He, along with Abraham and Moses, are the three main figures of the Old Testament. The life of David is full of humanness, good and bad, as he grows from a young adult keeping his father’s flock to king over the whole nation of Israel. His experiences travel the gamut of life’s emotions: joy, fear, love, doubt, happiness, sadness, betrayal, victory, pride, faith, disappointment, revenge, despair, hope.

Throughout his life he does have one constant, his God, the ever-present God of Israel whom he trusts and serves and mediates on night and day.  In our time together, we will explore David as a young man, a warrior, a king, and a Psalmist as he endeavors to keep his heart right with God. A choice of character is far more important than a choice of profession.

In this seminar we track the beginning of the history of the kings of Israel. We start with Samuel the last judge who anoints Saul as the first king of Israel. Saul’s stand for God lasted only 2 years but he reigned for 40. Samuel anoints David as king at a very tender age. We track the heart of David as he goes from being a child-shepherd to being king-shepherd. In conclusion we address Solomon and how his love for the true God was swayed as his heart was tainted toward other gods leading to the kingdom splitting into two as Rehoboam, Solomon’s son and Jeroboam become the leaders over two separate nations.

We read the Psalms David writes as he is experiencing his trials. This gives us extra insight into his heart as he records his thoughts as he runs for his life, or is jubilant toward his God as the Ark is brought back to Israel.

The entire seminar is four segments consisting of approximately 3 hours each including breaks. Handouts that illustrate chronologically the book of Samuel, Kings and Chronicles are given.

If you ever wanted to understand the timeframe of Samuel-Kings-Chronicles in the Bible and David’s role in it, this is the seminar for you.
