Before We Get Gathered

Number 40: March 14, 2006

Today is my wife’s birthday. She is ... years old. You didn’t actually expect me to tell, did you? In the Bible, there is only one woman’s age stated, Abraham’s wife Sarah. The emphasis that is not to be lost in the giving of her age, is that, at a ripe old age, well past the time of normal child-bearing, but with the help of God, she had her first child, Isaac. God was able to work in a situation which was humanly impossible. Do we limit God?

Genesis 17:17:

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

Genesis 18:11 and 14:

Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Genesis 21:1-3:

And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.

For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

Is there anything too hard for God? That is a great question. Too many times we give up on the promises of God. God is there for us, but we allow the senses world to dictate our circumstances in life. We read the over 900 promises of God in the Bible, but we lack the staying power to allow God’s blessings into our lives. It is a good thing that Abraham never quit believing, because the promised seed of the woman, the Messiah, was to be of his lineage.

Romans 4:19-21:

And being not weak in faith, he considered [not- omit] his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Oh, by the way, because of the goodness of God, He allowed Sarah many years to enjoy her son.

Genesis 23:1:

And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.
