Before We Get Gathered

Number 58: July 5, 2006

One thing is certain, and that is, the uncertainty of history. Was Paul Revere the hero of the evening with his wakeup cry of “the British are coming,” or did the other two riders cover more ground and alert more Americans? Most people today learn about Paul Revere’s ride based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem In reality, Paul Revere’s name just fit better in the poem than either of the other two riders. Thus, he is remembered, the other two are forgotten.

Did Molly Pitcher drop her ceramic pitcher to load the cannon of her dead husband? Many historians do not even believe that she ever existed. Did Betsy Ross really sew the first flag or did she hold out for better working conditions? Did George Washington always tell the truth? The Bible says that all men are liars. Was the Declaration of Independence signed in one night by all the signers in Philadelphia or did it take weeks for all to eventually sign?

It is a good thing the Bible doesn’t need historians or poets or artists to validate it. Nor does it need to be edited or updated. The men and women of the Bible really existed and did what they are credited with. God is the author of the Bible and He had it written so we could profit from it..

II Timothy 3:16:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Since all Scripture was given by God, it doesn’t need to go under the revisionist pen. God had recorded what He wanted us to know. The people and events in the Bible are real. Noah built an ark and survived the great flood. Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees and went into a land that God led him to. Moses really did see a burning bush and received the ten commandments from God. He didn’t make them up. The names have not been changed to protect the innocent.

The author of the Bible really loved mankind enough to sacrifice his only begotten son.

John 3:16 and 17:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus Christ was sent by God to totally redeem mankind. He actually performed all the miracles that are recorded in the Bible. He walked a perfect walk. He was totally obedient to His Father. We still benefit from his accomplished work today. We can trust God and take Him at His Word. All men certainly are liars. The historians may have their view of history, but we can trust God’s viewpoint to be the right one concerning all of history.
