Number 77: October 19, 2006



Speaking in tongues is the born-again believer’s external manifestation in the senses world of the internal reality and presence of the power of the holy spirit. When you speak in tongues you will edify yourself, build yourself up, make yourself strong spiritually.



I Corinthians 14:4a:

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…



The manifestation of speaking in tongues is the only evidence mentioned in the Bible which is specifically for building up the believer in the spirit. Thus, if you want to be personally edified, built up in the strength of the Lord, and have the power of His might in your life, you must speak in tongues much.



Every place in the book of Acts where the holy spirit was received and the initial external manifestation is mentioned, it was always speaking in tongues.



On the initial day of Pentecost:

Acts 2:4:

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.



At the household of Cornelius: [the first time the Gentiles received]

Acts 10:46:

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.



In Ephesus:

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.



When you speak in tongues, it is the spirit in you which is in direct communication with your heavenly Father, and thus you spirit is edified. This is the spirit from God in you as a gift which is now your spirit because you have been born again.



I Corinthians 14:2:

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.



You are speaking mysteries or divine secrets directly unto God when you speak in tongues. Those who speak in tongues much are greatly edified and built up in the spirit with mighty boldness. They become spiritually keen and spiritually perceptive. This sounds like a great goal to achieve in your spiritual life with God.
