Before We Get Gathered
Number 79: October 26, 2006
It is around noon. It has been steadily snowing since 3:30 this morning with
wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. The city has screeched to a halt.
Actually today, it never started. As alarms went off to start the morning, one
just needed to read the crawling messages that said “Don’t go anywhere unless
you absolutely have to!” to know that it was available to get some extra sleep.
Since snow is not unexpected in Colorado, we are prepared for it like the
virtuous woman.
Proverbs 31:21:
She [the virtuous woman] is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all
her household are clothed with scarlet [double garments].
Snow is also used as a symbol for purity in the Bible.
Isaiah 1:18:
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as
scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they
shall be as wool.
Psalm 51:7:
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than
snow.
Matthew 28:2 and 3:
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended
from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
Mark 9:3:
And his [Jesus] raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller
on earth can white them.
God uses the concept of rarity and inconvenience of snow in summer or rain
during the harvest, to illustrate a point about the fool, the one who does not
listen to God, thus he lacks honor.
Proverbs 26:1:
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
Snow is a part of God’s earthly balanced plan. When it comes in such great
quantities, it allows us to take time out from our busy schedules to reflect on
how much He really loves and cares.
Isaiah 55:10:
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not
thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may
give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater.
