Before We Get Gathered
Number 93: February 5, 2007
Yesterday was the last day of religious season. It was Super Bowl Sunday. I know the Pro Bowl [pro footballs all-star game] is next week, but no one watches it unless they are bedridden with an incurable disease or snowed in. Football has become more of a religious rite than Church going. With what is being taught in many churches today, watching your favorite football team may be more profitable.
II Timothy 4:2:
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
This verse instructs the believer to preach God’s Word no matter if it is football, baseball, basketball, hockey, golf, tennis, curling, skiing, or hunting season.
The word season means convenient. We are to hold forth God’s Word when it is convenient to do so and even when it is not convenient to do so.
The Revised Berkeley Version in Modern English translates II Timothy 4:2 as:
Preach the message; be at it when convenient and when not convenient; correct, exhort, rebuke with complete patience and teaching.
This is a good habit to add to any season; preaching the message of Christ.
Mark 1:14 and 15:
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
The word for season is also translated as time. Our time on this planet is short. We need to have our priorities in the proper order. It is worth it to put forth the effort to tell others about the accomplished work of Christ. What he did on our behalf. Why he died for us.
Galatians 6:9 and 10:
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
As we have therefore opportunity [season, time], let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Romans 8:18:
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
